In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born—three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.

INITIAL THOUGHTS: So this is one of the recent books that I’ve bought later this year and I was really compelled with the title, synopsis and cover of the book.

THOUGHTS:  I was reading to disappoint. I honestly thought that it had a very promising start and started off quite good. The world-building is a little vague though. It definitely needs more work and development. But the concepts are definitely decent. The characters were very similar to each other. I don’t know about you but I did not feel any much difference between the queens. And don’t get me on the weird love triangles and love interests. This book is seriously messed up. It is dark like what it promised but it is just so messed up that I can’t stop complaining about it. I did feel a pull to root for Katharine for some reason but that ended very quickly. The characters are too formal in a silly way and I wish the dialogues were better.
I did have issues with the narration but I’m kind of relieved it was in third person because I get to see details in a general perspective. I almost closed this book and never looked back but I wanted to give it a chance and what did I get? IT MESSED UP MY MIND SO MUCH. The things happening near the end felt forced. The shocking plot twists felt limp and useless. The ending did blow my mind but it was just presented horribly and felt very rushed.

FINAL THOUGHTS: I don’t know if I’ll read the next book but I am a bit curious to know what happens next. A dark fantasy that lacked planning and development. The author should have thought of everything and timed everything before she wrote it in a piece of paper.
